Science Master's Education Surveys
Summary
American Geological Institute •
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics •
Society for Industrial Microbiology
The average size of master's program in the three studied fields are shown
below. The geosciences reported by far the highest average size of enrollments
and degrees. Faculty size ranged from an average 15 in the geosciences to
32 in applied mathematics.
Average Size of Masters Programs in Three Selected Fields
1 Based on responses from 122 geoscience departments
2 Based on responses from 47-49 microbiology programs in 38 institutions
3 Based on responses from 56 departments of applied mathematics
Source: CPST, data derived from AGI, SIM and SIAM surveys
As shown in the chart below, the master's degree programs in the
geosciences and microbiology/biotechnology are overwhelmingly research-oriented,
while the programs in applied mathematics are primarily business/industry-oriented.
A comparison of specific program elements in the three fields is shown below.
Regardless of field, the top recruitment method was the department website,
with 35% of the geoscience and applied mathematics departments and 39% of
the microbiology/ biotechnology utilizing this method. The method least
utilized was online marketing/ advertising.
As shown in the following chart, teaching assistantships were the top source
of support for master's students in all the fields, while personal resources
was a close second for students in applied mathematics.
As shown in the table below, students in all three fields are most satisfied
with the quality of the faculty and the quality/flexibility of the curriculum
and program. Faculty finds interactions with the students, the quality of
the students and the employment placements to be the most rewarding.
